About Bled
Bled, the Slovenia’s number one tourist attraction is located in the beautiful and mountainous northwest of Slovenia. With less than 1-hour drive from Ljubljana and 1.5 hour from Koper it’s easily accessible and perfect for a half day trip.
The town of Bled, with its alpine lake, glacial origin, the famous island-living goddess, and the oldest castle in Slovenia, is one of the most prestigious Slovenian resorts. Bled has been the most popular tourist resort in Austro-Hungarian Monarchy since the 19th century Swiss doctor Arnold Rikli discovered its ideal natural conditions and founded a
health centre there. Also the Yugoslavian president Tito had one of the residences here, The Vila Bled hotel. Before him,
this was a vacation spot for the royal family of the first Yugoslav king, Aleksandar Karađorđević. The residence is located on the shore of Lake Bled and is surrounded by a glorious park, full of beautiful flowers and mighty trees.
The Bled Island, on Lake Bled, features a picturesque church and stunning views of the beautiful emerald coloured lake.
The island has been visited by pilgrims since ancient history, and you can reach it by a wooden traditional boat called pletna.
Above the lake there is a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff face, from where you can admire the unbelievable beauty of the lake and the high peaks of the Julian Alps.
